Gynecomastia Causes: What Causes Man Boobs?
Some gynecomastia causes are predictable and easy to correct, like lack of exercise and a poor diet. Others are a little harder to determine, like problems with hormone levels or heredity. And some of the causes are still unknown, which probably doesn’t give you any peace of mind at all. Because you’re here to find out exactly what causes gynecomastia and what you can do to get rid of your man boobs.
Gynecomastia is the medical term for overly large breasts in men. Symptoms of this condition can range from simple puffiness around the nipples to full, feminine looking breasts, which is why you may have heard this condition referred to as man boobs.
While there’s no conclusive research that determines the exact causes of gynecomastia, it’s most commonly attributed to an imbalance in hormone levels. When the estrogen and testosterone are out of balance it can lead to an accumulation of fat in and around the chest area in males.
The cause of this hormone imbalance can be any number of things. Poor diet and nutrition come first, but it may also be caused by certain medications. If you’ve used anabolic steroids for an extended period of time that could also be a cause. Even alcohol and drug abuse can alter hormone levels.
There are two types of gynecomastia and it’s important to determine which type you have before you decide on a course of treatment. Thankfully, most cases can be cured, or at least minimized, without invasive surgery.
- Pseudo-Gynecomastia is a result of a build up of body fat. It’s the most common type and can usually be eliminated with a healthy diet and a regular exercise routine.
- Gynecomastia is less common and more difficult to diagnose and treat. With this condition it’s not just excess fat that’s present, there’s also breast tissue developing. You may notice a hard lump or tenderness in your chest and your first thought will be that you need to resort to surgery. But that’s not always necessary. In some cases even this condition can be minimized with diet and exercise.
While exact gynecomastia causes are still unknown, research has shown that eating a healthy, low-fat diet and establishing a regular exercise regimen that focuses on the abs and upper body will have a positive effect toward reducing your man boobs.

Consult your physician if you’re worried but even he will probably agree – all you really need to do is start taking better care of yourself so you can get your hormone levels back under control. Then you won’t need to worry about the causes of man boobs because yours will have melted away.
