Healing the past
Our choice of imagery reflects who we are. What one of us finds disquieting, another may find liberating. When Amy did “The Exorcism,” she was quick to remove her mother, along with several others who appeared, working on each person for seven days or until he or she was completely gone from her body. Amy said her mother had never really been there for her except at her convenience or when she felt needy. Then Mom would pull her close, restricting her life with her needs and demands, only to abandon her once again when her needs changed or were met by someone else.
Using the exercise made Amy feel more open. Within a couple of weeks the number of asthma attacks was cut in half. After relieving her symptoms with “The Exorcism,” Amy felt ready to confront a memory of sexual abuse from the time she was six. But through using imagination we have a chance to do more. Since what we can do, see, or be in imagination has no limits, Amy used this imagery exercise and returned to the scene of the abuse in a new way. With the strength she had gained from her previous imagery experience, she found herself able to Undo the past by simply walking away from this person. She saw herself getting up, opening the door, leaving the room, and closing the door behind her. Immediately, her perception of the past, including her feelings and beliefs about it, shifted.
Any discussion of past events is irrelevant: people spend much of their time thinking, discussing, or denying, only to remain trapped. The experience that had haunted Amy all her life was put to rest, first by transforming it, then by “closing the door” on it. From that time on, if any memories were triggered, she had the imagery to use as a buffer and a transformer.
Amy had gone from victim to victor in less than three minutes. She felt liberated and reborn. What she had accomplished was an Undoing of her perception of this past event. Amy had been living this event over and over again in her memory and was constantly open to reminders of it in her daily life.
