The Bowen Technique
The Bowen Technique is named after Tom Bowen. Tom Bowen was an Australian who created this technique and used it to treat all sorts of illnesses and ailments very effectively.
The moves itself are very gentle, non invasive moves that are made on specific points on the body. Some of these moves correspond to acupuncture points but Bowen is quite different from acupuncture. No needles are used. The moves itself are slight rolling motions that are done over muscles and ligaments. These gentle moves are very effective at relaxing the muscles and reducing any tension.
One characteristic of the Bowen treatment is that the practitioner leaves the room in between moves. This is done for a couple of reasons.
- Firstly, it gives the body time to process the signals it has received.
- Secondly, by leaving the room the practitioner allows the client to fully relax as it is sometimes difficult to drift off when there is someone else close by. Once the body is relaxed, it is easier for any repair processes to take place.
This technique can be used to treat a whole host of aches and pains as well as major illnesses. Chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia, Parkinsons and multiple sclerosis respond very well to this soft touch therapy. Other more common ailments such as back pain, frozen shoulder, neck pain are also dealt with very effectively. The Bowen Technique has an amazing effect on one increasingly common ailment, asthma. The improvement is marked and almost immediate.
It is thought that Bowen somehow taps into the nervous system of the body. The nervous system is balanced out by two separate arms, the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. These work in tandem to maintain balance in the body. When the body is under stress the sympathetic nervous system takes charge and when relaxation is induced the parasympathetic goes to work. By maintaining balance in the body, Bowen enables the body to heal itself.
– The side effects of a Bowen Therapy include feeling slightly dizzy after a treatment, tired, thirsty and sometimes very energetic!
– The positive side effects such as the feeling of being balanced and relaxed are long lasting. Many report an improvement in posture. Sportsman and athletes use Bowen to maintain balance and to reduce injuries.
The Bowen Technique is a very effective method of relieving muscular tension, aches and pains as well as treating chronic conditions. This gentle, soft touch therapy is fast becoming the treatment of choice for many.
